INTRODUCTION

Background of Study

Written communication is a means of bring about change. It is the mean stream of any organization growth. There is a need for interaction and understanding of management, employee relations. This will bring about increase performance of all parties involved. As a medium, a means to performance ends, or as constitive, as the end in itself. Written communication is a process of transmitting information from one person to another. According to Stephen (2011). Written communication is a critical factor in directing and mobilizing the workforce towards the accomplishment of the organizational goals or objectives. By creating understanding, it enhances co-operative and promote effective performance, to Mekinney, Barker, Smith and Davis, (2004) written communication is essential to effective term performance and communication for any organization is like blood flow in the human body.

Therefore any organization that understands the importance of written communication uses it in their organizational environment. Since it ensure coordination of factors of production and most importantly material and human elements organization as an efficient network of change and advancement. Many of organizations including Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, explores the e-learning and e-training to empower its stuff and students in the use of written communication in communicating policies, lectures, staff development and lot more. This would stand as a mile stone for the polytechnic as a whole networked for effective written communication and performance. It becomes important to emphasize an innovation and effective use of written communication medium or channel to bring about high performance rate. Hence any break down in written communication process or chain can have service adverse effects and organizational performance. Furthermore, knowing  fully well that poor communication rank as the single most important reason that people do not advance in their career as stated  by Lepsinger and Luacia (1997). Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify the roles plied by management (Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic), in transmitting and managing information to increase the performance of its staff. Effective written communication brings about high performance.

Statement of the Problem

Many industrial disputes originate due to failure in communication. Hence, it is important to stress that in written communication, emotions, environment, psychological and technical characteristics of the medium is needed to enhance organizational performance. The importance of written communication in an organization cannot be over-emphasized. This study seeks to investigate the extent of application of written communication in Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic workforce, also to examine those written communication technique that enhance performance in an organization; to ascertain the implication of communication gap in an organization.

Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this study are:

to ascertain the extent of application of written communication in Akwa Ibom state polytechnic workforce. to examine written communication techniques that enhance performance in Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua. to investigate the relationship between effective written communication and employee performance in Akwa Ibom State polytechnic, Ikot Osurua. to ascertain whether communication gap has affected job performance of procedure in Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua. Research Questions

The research questions of this study are:

tgo what extent is written communication applied in Akwa Ibom state polytechnic workforce. what written communication techniques enhance employee’s performance in Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua. what is the relationship between effective written communication and employee performance in Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua. to what extent has communication gap affected job performance of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua staff. Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to organizations to know the importance of written communication in enhancing employee performance. It will also be useful to students who want to research a related topic as it will serve as reference material, it will also be useful to the general public to know the usefulness of written communication.

Scope of the Study

This study focused on effectiveness of written communication on organizational performance using Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic as a case study.

Definition of Key Concepts

Communication: this is the process of sending and receiving of messages through then channels of communication such as Radio, Television, and writing etc.

Effectiveness: the usefulness of written communication in Akwa Ibom Sate Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.

Written communication: this is the process of communication expressed through writing.

Organizational Performance: This is the output and input of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic to its organization or institution.
