INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The church of Christ has always been, since its inception, a community of believers, sharing the Christian values of love, peace, and goodwill to all mankind. It is important to remind ourselves that Christianity did not exist before Christ. With the advent of Christ, the Christian religion, different from all other forms of religions, came into existence (Ahaziah, 2005).

The church which is the community of love, believers in God through Christ, the community of the saved of mankind through Jesus Christ our Lord needs effective Christian administration in order to ensure that the body of Christ does not scatter. This has necessitated the need for administrative development training in the contemporary church due to religious change in the society. The world is changing everyday and the church is equally changing. These complex changes in the church require effective administrators to pilot the affairs of the church as Jesus Christ did to his disciples.

A Christian administrator is one who is born again with the spiritual ability, moral determination and commitment to gather and enlist followers and members, gather and apply material and monetary resources, aimed at beginning, continuing and consummating a mission that will fulfill visions that is in line with the will of God (John, 2015).

The need for administration in the church is because there are many unruly people and vain talkers and deceivers. Especially they of the circumcision (Okpara, 1991). Churches, mission boards, collage and seminaries, Para church organizations suffer in these crisis times because of mismanagement. Not because of bad people, laziness, insufficient funding but suffers because of ineffective administration. The function of organizational leadership is to influence the group toward the achievement of group goals by planning, organizing, directing and integrating the institutional demands and the needs of members. Administrators are responsible for the effectiveness of the organizations; they help maintain order and stability; they uphold standards and organizational goals; and they are Gods way of shepherding His people. Almost everyone imagine himself a born leader. Education and culture has a great effect on whether a leader will succeed or not. Culture can be detrimental to successful administration, especially if the culture style is in conflict with the biblical style of leadership. Many want to be a leader but few want the responsibility of an administration. How we want to lead and how we want to be led are no always the same. The training of a leader can be complex process. It includes intellectual development, skill training and a spiritual aspect. Unfortunately, we often wait too long to begin the development of a leader ( George and Bitrus, 2005).

Foundational Christian administration has two directions, the first is toward God and the second is toward people. Toward God, we know that leaders are suppose to glorify God (1 Corinthians 10:31). They should set their mind on things above (Colossians 3:2).  They should seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).  Their ambitions should be pleasing to God (2 Corinthians 2:9). A Christian administration first responsibility is toward God. On the other hand toward the people, a leader is to be loving and nurturing. Jesus said “if you love me feed my sheep” (John 21:17).  Leaders should be willing to lay down their lives for the brethren (1John3:16-18) and they should shepherd the flock with eagerness (1 Peter 5:2).

Our understanding of Christian administration in the church has been influence by our cultural heritage. The organizational patterns of western churches are not entirely relevant to African. Early missionary continue to affect the present administrative structure of the churches in Africa and Nigeria in particular. Missionaries brought some administrative influences which did not fit into the African context. This was due to their culture, background and education. Effective administration has always been affected by many influence and factors. Christian leaders will be more successful if they can identify which factors are guiding them. As the church continue to discover it own way, these factors needs to be taken into account if really we want to have effective Christian leadership.

It is against this background that this project seeks to examine effective Christian administration

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The Christian ministry and discipleship require effective administration. The realization of the will of God, within a fluid and rapidly changing world demands more of Christian administrator because the central concern of Christian ministry and church involves the realization of the goals of Christian discipleship, rather than religious management. administration also involves doing the right things, distribution of responsibilities, working with others, achieving success with goodwill and cooperation, assigning responsibilities, earned and not often conferred administration demands and requires availability of knowledge, skills, character and integrity, learning and requires changes and innovation.

However, in our contemporary church today, these administrative qualities are missing because the leadership and administrative development training are not giving much attention. This has led to poor administration in contemporary church, administrative lapses, conflict and corruption. Based on this assertion, what the contemporary   church needs now is affective Christian administrator and leadership development training to ensure that the church meet up to her responsibilities.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objective of the study includes the following:

  1. To examine effective Christian administration and the necessity of administrative development training in the church.
  2. To investigate the causes of poor Christian administration in contemporary church.
  • To assess the role of an effective Christian administration in the contemporary church.
  1. To examine administrative development training in the contemporary church and its challenges
  2. Finally to proffer solutions to the problem of Christian administrative in contemporary church.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significant of the study lies in the fact that it will in all ramifications expand the existing knowledge of the Christian administration and development training in the contemporary church.

It will help the contemporary church to have a doctrine and a tradition about effective Christian administration and also to establish a administrative development training college by the church.

The study will be significant for pastors, church leaders, scholars, historians, theologians and the general public that may wish to conduct further and similar research on this topic.

Finally, the study will serve as a guide for future Christian administrators in contemporary church.

1.5 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study of administration is very wide and complex, and for this reason, the study will focus its attention on effective Christian development in the contemporary church. In the course of this study, certain factors were seen as limitations and they include time, limited finance to defray the cost of research, culture of silence and geographical expansion of the contemporary church.

1.6 METHODOLGY

The study will use a historical method throughout the work. However, data for the study will be collected through primary and secondary source. The primary source will include data gathered on the field of study through questionnaire oral interview and participation observation. While the secondary sources will include published books, journals, magazines, church bulletin, reports of church committees, internet materials (JESTOR, GOOGLE BOOKS etc)

1.7 ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY

This project is divided into five chapters namely:
