ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study is to show the role of bank in the development of small and medium enterprises in Nigeria. The researcher intends to carryout the case study of this topic at United Bank for Africa Plc, with the use of questionnaire and interview guide. Our findings will enable us to know how banks in Nigeria contribute to the development of small and medium enterprises in Nigeria which also help in our economy. Finally, conclusions and recommendation will be adequately given.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Banking activities came to Nigeria for the first time in the year 1892 when the Africa Banking cooperation was established. Development in Nigeria can be divided into five phases namely: the free banking era the pre central era the era of banking legislation the era of individualization the post Okigbo era The Nigeria small and medium enterprises (SMES) and bank was incorporated in the 1970s and fall within the era of indigenization with the aim of financing small and medium enterprises in Nigeria economy.
