THE IMPACTS OF EFFECTIVE REVENUE GENERATION AND GRASSROOTS GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA
This study was undertaken to investigate The Impacts of Effective Revenue generation and grassroots governance in Nigeria using Itu Local Government Area as a case study. The study is aimed at discovering different revenue generation and local government governance. To determine the impacts of effective revenue generation and grassroots governance in Nigeria using Itu Local Government administration, data obtained through the use of questionnaire administered to the senior officers of the council was analysed by descriptive statistical method of simple frequency and percentages. From the study it was discovered that the accrue funds from local generating sources and federal allocation are not properly channeled to meet the need of the people and the council rely heavily on federal allocations thereby neglecting other sources of revenue derivation in the local government, that inspite of the available funds from federal allocations, many project embarked upon could be completed by political office holders. Based on this findings recommendations were made among which were staffs and the entire council should also depend on local government generated funds, not embarking on federal government’s allocations, that project selection should be based on priority needs of the people. The study also recommended that indigenes should respond to tax payment to enable the local governments generate funds for its governance. The research also recommended that for further studies, such study should be carried out in other local government of the state so as to widen the coverage on the issue of revenue generation and grass root governance.
