TEACHERS’ VARIABLES AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN URUAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF AKWA IBOM STATE

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to determine the extent to which Teachers’ Variables relate with Students’ Academic Performance in Social Studies in Junior Secondary Schools in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The study adopted ex-post factor research design. The population of the study consisted of all the Public Secondary Schools in the area totaling 13. The study adopted stratified random sampling technique to select the sample which stood at 256. To achieve this aim, three null hypothesis ­were formulated to guide the study. Data collected was done using the instrument: Teachers’ Variables and Students’ Academic Performance Questionnaire (TVSAPQ), while analysis was done using Pearson Product Moment Coefficient Analysis. The results indicated that teachers’ educational qualifications, teachers’ experience and teachers’ age were positively significant to the students’ academic performance. It was concluded that teachers’ variables have positive relationship with students’ academic performance. Based on these three findings, five recommendations and three suggestions for further studies were made respectively.
