STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF EFFECT OF ENTRY MODE ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES OF FIRST YEAR STUDENTS (A CASE STUDY OF DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY AKWA IBOM STATE POLYTECHNIC: 2015/2016 ACADEMIC SESSION)
CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
This project is carried out on the statistical analysis of the performance of first year students relating to their mode of entry into Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua. A case study of Science Technology Department for 2015/2016 Academic Session.
However, in Nigeria the pre-requisite for Polytechnic admission is at least five credits passes in ordinary level subjects and the ability to attain the cut-off point mark in Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination for the course of interest.
Quite often other conditions and constraints like the Polytechnic first choice, catchment area, among others, come into ploy.
Experience has however shown that many brilliant students owning to one reason or the other have difficulty in either meeting the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) cut-off pont or having the relevant papers at the ordinary level in not more than the required two sittings. JAMB had recently introduced the Computer Based Test (CBT), which would also affect a candidate because of lack of knowledge on the use of the new method. They are so many forms that lead to the hindrance of student not having the JAMB cut-off point.
It is pertinent to note that prospective candidates wishing to study in Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, the Polytechnic has two major ways of gaining entry or admission into regular programe namely; Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination and Preliminary National Diploma (Pre-ND) programme.
The effect of mode of entry on the performance of first year students in Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic has generated problem.
Some asserted that the performance of students in first year is independent on their mode of entry. This work seeks to solve the above problem.
The objectives of this study are;
To find out if the performances of first year student in Science Laboratory Technology is dependent on their entry mode
