CHAPTER ONE

 

  • INTRODUCTION

The important of effective communication in tertiary education management is sine quo non in the administrative aspect of the institution and also a basic tool or mechanism used by superior to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the subordinate in the management of an organization.

In tertiary education management the role of communication is very vital thus, it facilitate the flow of information, idea or thought from superior to subordinate staff or vis-versa. (upward/downward communication )among staff could be vertical or horizontal.

Abia (2014) as observed by Ainan (1991)downward communication in education management help to tie the level of the organizational structure together and to coordinate activities while upward communication on the other hands is that which flows from subordinate feel free to convey their opinions.

Vertical/ horizontal communication in tertiary education allows for interaction among colleague and thus, provide social and emotional support to staff (Inyang, Oden and Esu 2003).

There are other types of communication in education management such as diagonal communication that occurs between people who are either in the same department or the same level of hierarchy.

 

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

           The cause of poor management efficiency in the institution is due to lack or ineffective communication in the school administration therefore, causing poor yield in academic productivity.

The necessity of effective communication in the institution will enhance a sound and the smooth administration and it will yield good performance in the school curriculum and other activities in the school. To breach this gap in the Akwa Ibom State polytechnic, superior staff should check if the affairs of the school are carried out accordingly through orientation to student asking to know their areas of challenges and to proffer solution to these problems. From here question could be asked, how effective is communication in the school? Are the lecturers and the students communicating effectively? Another could be, is communication relevant in the school management? This study sought to find out answer to this problems.

 

1.3     OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: 

  1. To bring to light the importance of effective communication in the school management.

Ii      To ascertain  ways of improving effective communication in the Akwa Ibom State polytechnic management.

iii       To examine the roles of effective communication in the school management.

iv       To identify the problem associated with effective communication in the Akwa Ibom State polytechnic management.

1.4     RESEARCH QUESTION:

1           What are the importance of effective communication in Akwa Ibom State polytechnic management? .
