Abstract

Tiger nut (cyperus esculentus) is a tuber from the family cuperaceae. It is considered as an intrusive weed in most countries but taken as snacks in Nigeria and other countries. Tiger nut color varies from yellow, brown and black. The principal component of tiger nut is carbohydrate and oil which is about 24.5%. Tiger nut us widely endowed with a wide range of ethophamacological benefits hence, has been used as herbal medicine for the alleviation of several diseases. The present study was aimed at investigating the phytochemical constituents of various herbal portions of tiger nuts use in the treatment of diseases. The analysis shows that the methanolic extract contain a wide range of phytochemicals like saponin, tannin and steroid agebus and other herbal extracts shows the presence of flavonoid, sterols, saponin and tannin. This result therefore indicates methanolic and other herbal mixtures of tiger nut have the presence of most of the useful phytochemicals and therefore potentials in alleviating several diseases.
