PHYSICO CHEMICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE QUALITY SACHET WATER MARKETED IN MINNA METROPOLIS

1.1 Background to the Study
According to Traven (2000) water is defined as a liquid substance that is clear, colourless and odourless, capable
of existing in a liquid, solid and gaseous phase. It is a basic necessity of life, second to air, because it serves as a
source of nourishment to man, animals, micro organisms and even plants. Water is also considered to be an
essential ingredient for human survival and development throughout history (Biswas, 2005).
Access to safe drinking water is key to sustainable development and essential to food production, quality health
and poverty reduction (Chaurasia and Tiwari, 2011). Safe drinking water is essential to life and a satisfactory
safe supply must be made available to consumers (Verma et al., 2012).
Okonkwo et al., (2008) reported that in many developing countries, availability of water has become a critical
and urgent problem and it is a matter of great concern for families and communities depending on non public
water supply system. According to them, this critical demand for water may be due to increase in human
popular, which exerts an enormous pressure on the provision of safe drinking water especially in developing
countries.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In the light of inadequate or lack of quality potable water supplies from the municipal sources, urban residents
have resorted to both formal and informal sector providers to supply the

1.3 Objectives of the Study
The major objective of the research is the physiochemical assessment of the quality of sachet water marketed in
Minna metropolis.

1.4 Research Questions
1. What is water quality ?
2. What are the various brands of water marketed in Minna metropolis ?
3. What are the sources of raw water used by this brands of sachet water?
4. Which physico chemical analysis are to be carried out on these sachet water?

1.5 Significance of the Study
This study gives a clear insight into the physiochemical properties if sachet water marketed in Minna metropolis.
It also gives a clear insight into which of the sachet water met with the standard and guidelines values for
physical and chemical qualities of potable water prescribed by regulatory authority.

1.6 Scope of the Study
The research focuses on the physics chemical assessment of the quality of sachet water marketed in Minna
metropolis.

1.7 Limitations of the Study
Twenty four samples of packaged sachet water produced in Minna metropolis were collected from factories in
four different zones. That is, six samples from each zones.
