PERCIEVED INFLUENCE OF BROKEN HOME ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

 

ABSTRACT

The study examined perceived influence of broken home on the academic achievement of senior secondary school students in jalingo educational zone” implication for counseling, a case study of public and private secondary schools in Jalingo Local Government area of Taraba State. The study employed the survey design and the purposive sampling technique to select 450 staff SSS 1-3 level. A well-constructed questionnaire, which was adjudged valid and reliable, was used for collection of data from the respondents. The data obtained through the administration of the questionnaires was analyzed using the Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed that there is positive and significant relationship between Educational challenges and academic achievement (r=0.772; p<0.05). Academic achievement of male and female students (r=.896; p<0.05). Academic achievement of students schooling in urban and rural (r=0.772; p<0.05). Academic achievement of students attending private and public (r=.896; p<0.05). The study concluded that percieved influence of broken home on the academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Jalingo Educational Zone” implication for counseling was potent.

The study suggested that; Parents should consider the implications of broken homes, especially divorce in areas of social & emotional adjustment in schools; Families should understand the damage of separation of partners on the children and look for palliatives that would help in healthy social and emotional development of the children; Family therapy should be sought for assistance to avoid some cases of broken homes. Therefore family counselling should be used to intervene in family crises; Government should review the law on child abuse from the current to reasonable and substantial level to better the lives of the all children from broken homes in the country; Employment opportunities should be created for the unemployed seperated parents, so the both parent can monitor the child growing attitude and satisfaction.
