INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Poor market sanitation is an intractable problem in Nigeria and has contributed to the spread of infectious diseases and environment degradation. This study was undertaken to determine the awareness and practice of solid waste management in the Benin Market among market users.
The market is supposed to be kept clean because it is a place in which people from all works of life meet in order to buy what the family needs. Being exposed to environmental waste could affect their health.
The Benin market to be specific in ancient times had a culture of market maintenance as people were assigned by the government to carry dirt from the market as at when necessary.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Traders and buyers in the market place, including the passersby, are negligent in their attitude towards the sanitation of the market place. On the other hand taxes are collected from traders who sell by the road side and the environment untidy.
This affects the health of traders and buyers and the passersby who go through the market each day.
The researcher has discovered that artist who painted the market scenes are mainly concerned with the aesthetical value of the market and also most of these art works are produced in oil or acrylic on canvas.
The researcher has decided to tackle the problem of market sanction with another medium which is a mixed – media representation (charcoal, pastel and other materials) other than oil painting or acrylic.
