MASS MEDIA MESSAGES AND ATTITUDE OF UYO URBAN WOMEN TOWARDS FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

A study on Mass Media messages and attitude of Uyo Urban women towards female genital mutilation was carried out. Which shows that mutilations are of types, Clitoridectomy, Excision and infibulations which are practice of cutting or total removal of a female genital, the study’s design was the survey, the study’s population was 156, 460 and the same size was 400 the study’s tools was the questionnaire. Data for the study were presented using frequency distribution table. In analyzing the obtained data, the researcher adopted simple percentage and statistical tool. Findings revealed that the female genital mutilation did not portray the image of society. Also the messages spread by the mass media did not remedy the situation. The practitioners of female genital mutilation did not notice the extent to which such practice has done on women. Lastly, the right of girls being subjected to the mutilated was violated. Based in these findings the study recommended that constrictive criticism on the dangers of genital mutilation should be advanced by the mass media. Then, the mass media should intensify messages in the need to stop the pract8ice of female genital mutilation. More so, women organization and intellectuals belonging to women folk should send their grievances through the mass media. In addition, the practice should be discontinued through the use of slogan; lastly human right commission should intervene on the practice of Female Genital Mutilation.
