MARITIME EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN NIGERIA: CURRENT PROBLEMS IN THE LIGHT OF NEW AND CHANGING TECHNOLOGY AND INTERNATIONAL LEGISLATION

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate maritime education and training in Nigeria: current problems in the light of new and changing technology and international legislation with a particular reference to Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN). To achieve this objective, three research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The data was collected from primary sources. The primary data were collected with the help of a well-structured questionnaire of two sections administered to the respondents in Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN). The collected data were analyzed with tables and descriptive statistics to analyze the research questions while t-test statistical tool to test the research hypotheses. The study reveals that Nigeria maritime sector adopted the new changing technology and international legislation and there are problems facing maritime education and training in Nigeria. The study concluded with some recommendations that a policy structure to attract, employ, and retain qualified maritime lecturers should be established by the Maritime Academy and the Federal Government of Nigeria should as a matter of urgency take all necessary steps to incorporate STCW ’95 convention into the national shipping law.
