CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION   

1.1     BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY   

The impact of radio and television campaign on cultism in Nigerian cannot be undermined. Instead, it has gotten enough recognition in our society and beyond, because the extent at which campus cultism is increasing in Nigeria. Tertiary institution of learning is alarming and year always grip the heart of Nigeria students who lives with one eye closed and the other widely open in alert. all in the name of not waiting to fall victim of the menace. Since the formation of secret cult in Nigeria by same group of people led by professor Oluwole Soyinka, believe that it would be used to propagate peculiar idea, while every of their plans are kept in secret without revealing it to anyone now, the story has changed drastically. The once secret keeping god had now turned to secret cult of blood intimidation of learning across is so rampart and has been extend to same primary and secondary schools in Nigeria. Campus cultism now promotes to child abuse, human and drug trafficking, rapping, killing etc Violence is everywhere in Nigeria, especially on campus, lives were lost, student were maimed, some killed and all other criminal activities are not exempted . all happens in the glory name of cultism in the society.     
In this case, Radio and Television have a major role to play in campaigning against this deadly monster in Nigeria. However all other media agencies are not left out. One an only rely on both the radio and television in curbing the existence of cultism in our midst, because they present all progammes, adverts or jingles and some other things that could give a thought to the youths and they all reach every nooks craning of the country in information dissemination.         
1.2       STATEMENT OF PROBLEM   
The larger percentage of Nigeria tertiary institutions and post primary institution are cultist.   This undesirable and pathetic situation has been bothering the local, state, Federal Government and the general populace at large.   The problem of campus cultism in the country has put many institutions and families into problem, while many institutions academic session get extended, all because of cultism. For example, a student who is suppose to use four years in university might end up using six years if there is problem such parents lose their children in cultist clash or be a member of the cultist, these and many other problems are the reason why radio and television station embark on campaign against campus cultism. Therefore, this project will look at the impact of radio and television on campus cultism in Nigeria using Osun State Polytechnic, Iree as case study.   
1.3    RESEARCH QUESTIONS   
i.     How far have radio and television enlightenment campaign gone in educating and informing the students on the dangers of the social vice (cuiltism)?   
ii.    How far have radio and television gone in affecting attitudinal change among the students of the institution?   
iii.   Should students be blamed for the increase in campus cultism in the institution?     
1.4    OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY   
The main objective of this research work are;-   
i.         To let people know the impact of how far have radio and television in campaigning against campus cultism in our institutions   
ii.        To promote programmes and idea that will distract the attentions of all and sundry from associating or been a member of cult.   
iii.       To shed more light on the existence of cultism on our various campuses, secondary schools and society at large.  
In relation to this, some Nigeria how far have radio and television is a medium through wish people catch fun and pay attention to the information which is broadcast on the how far have radio and televisions, when much attention is paid to how far radio and television programmes, ideas of highly intelligent people will help to curb this as it affect our youths.   Infect, children who watch television and listen to radio campaigns against campus cultism will not find it difficult to say no to cultism even when they are threatened or been lured by the friends.   Similarly, this helps to throw more light on how cultism on campus and secondary schools embark on their identities easy to reveal. However, radio and television have a lot of work to do in campaigning against the ugly situation. i.e, radio and television are the medium through wish enough and adequate information can be spread widely across the country. Progarmmes like, drama, talks, quiz, debates should be encourage to stop the menace.  This will let the people know the danger in cultism and let them do away with the shamed act.     
1.5      SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY   
This research project has a grant importance to the society, in particularly, academic environments. Indeed how far have radio and television has create awareness of the presence of cultism in our society. All Nigeria higher institutions is now in the bondage of cultism and gradually, cultism is now heard amidst of secondary school students where they threaten themselves , raping sexual harassment and crimes are committed by the students that had been injected with the spirit of the “monster” cultism.   In Nigeria where this project research will reveal some of the relevant of the study and tools used for campaign.  
-       They create the presented of cultism in our society.  
-       The origin of cultism in Nigeria.   
-       The havoc caused by cultism to the society.   
-       The possible ways to avert ugly act in our society.  
-       The hazards of been a member of a cult.  
-       The study tells all and sundry to shun cultism in our society.

This research project will open us to know more and better of how far have radio and television began their operations in the country and how far they had gone both in informing, educating and at the same time entertaining the general publics.   But as this study is concerned specifically we need to known how they inform public on this evil acts put on by some young people who are supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow and also to educate the public especially youths on what to do and what not to do so as not to fall a victim of this deadly monster cultism.     
1.6      SCOPE OF THE STUDY   
This research work will look at the definitions of cultism, it effect and way forward. It will also examine the origin of cultism in Nigeria i.e. who, what and when it started.   The role how far have radio and television have played to make sure that this monster called cultism is stamped out on our various across the country will also be discussed.   Osun State Polytechnic, Iree was chosen as my case study on this research work.    
1.7      LIMITATIONS   
One of the limitations of this research work is the aspect of finance and this is why I limited my selves to Osun State Polytechnic, Iree why using it to represent other higher institutions.   Also, the report of this research is limited to Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, however other Polytechnic may find it useful.
