EFFECTS OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF PHYLLANTHUSAMARUS AND ATROVASTATIN ON THE SERUM LDH, AST, BODY AND ORGAN WEIGHTS OF ALBINO RATS FED WITH HIGH CHOLESTEROL DIET
ABSTRACT
The effect of ethanolic extract of the leaves of Phyllanthusamarus and atorvastatin on serum LDH, AST, Body and organ weights was investigated in albino rats. Twenty five (25) adult male wistar rats weighing 130 to 270g were randomly assigned into five groups of five rats each. Groups IV and V were treated with 200mg/kg and 300mg/kg body weight of the plant extracts and egg yolk daily for twenty one days (21) respectively. Group III was treated with Atorvastin drug, Group II was fed with egg yolk only while group I served as control. Rats in all the groups received normal rat chow and distilled water. the activities of LDH and AST showed a non significant difference (P > 0.05) in all the test groups when compared with the control. However, there was a significant increased (P < 0.05) in the body weight gain of all the tested group when compared with the control while there was also a significant increase (P< 0.05) in the organs of liver, kidney, pancrease and heart in all the test group when compared with control but a significant decreased in the lung in groups II, III and IV but group V showed an increased in lung weight. When compared with the control. These results suggest that the administration of the ethanolic leaves extract of Phyllanthusamarus did not pose any pathological threat to the parameters analyzed when used at a moderate dose but may cause hypertrophy if use at higher doses.
