ABSTRACT
The project was carried out to examine the Effect of Computer Literacy on the Teaching and Learning of Social Studies in Ilorin Metropolis.
Two hundred respondents were randomly selected from Twenty (20) in Ilorin Metropolises. The data were collected, using questionnaire method. The data collected were analysed using frequency counts percentages and t-test four hypotheses formulated for the study. All the hypotheses were 8 tested at 0.5 alpha level.
Four research questions and four research hypotheses were raised to guide the study. A researcher made questionnaire and was validated by experts and the supervisor of this work and the reliability co-efficient of 0.62 was ensured through test-retest method using Pearson product moment correlation co-efficient statistical techniques.
With these affirmation, it was therefore, recommended that more qualified teachers should be employed, they should give them opportunity to attend seminars and workshops, the school library should be well stocked, while adequate funds should be provided to purchase spare parts and maintenance.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Computer is considered to be important
in many aspect of human endeavour. It plays a vital role in the life of
peoples; computer aids the development and achievement in so many aspect of
human endeavour. Computer makes life so easy and bearable; it assists business
enterprises, organization, education and technological centres (Charles, 2006).
According to Ajah (1982) and Ologo (1988) we are living in a world where
science and technology have become integral parts of the world’s culture, and
any country that over looked such significant tools does so at the risk of
remaining backward in technologically fast moving world.
To ensure a greater advancement in technology, everybody needs to become computer literate to a greater extent, whether at home, schools, banks, industry or offices. A greater effort has to be made by government in many countries such as Nigeria where at least little knowledge of computer has been introduced into most courses, starting from the primary school to tertiary institutions the role of computer in teaching and learning is now on the increases worldwide. In Europe, America and Asian countries, computer play significant roles in learning processes in all levels of education, including the world of E-mail and Internet.
It has been observed that, Nigeria can not
develop modern technology and sustain it, if she fails to play more emphasis on
computer education at the tertiary institution level.
The National Policy on Education (2004)
stressed that students should be well equipped to live effectively in our
modern age of science and technology. In order to solve the multitude of
problems facing the educational sector, there is need to put forward an
innovation right from the lower level of primary schools, which would lead to
effective, efficient, quantitative and individualized learning in spite of all
odds. This is the use of computer and individualized learning in spite of all
odds. This is the use of computer for classrooms teaching and learning.
The issue of poor usage and lack of
computer education is so bad that most teachers in our school don’t know how to
operate or interact with computer neither could they use one to teach their
students. The problems therefore, inspired the investigator to research into
factors militating against proper implementation of computer education in Ilorin metropolis, and
provide solution to such problems.
Statement of the Problems
A lot of challenges face the students’ acquisition of computer education. Some of the problems affecting effective teaching and learning of computer education include: inadequate facilities for teaching and learning computer education, there also the lack of enough qualified teachers for the study. This becomes important when we consider the effect. These could be on students’ performance in the subject. This then calls for investigation into the influence of computer education on parents’ performance.
