DETERMINANT OF WORK MOTIVATION AMONG JUNIOR EMPLOYEE IN ETINAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
The motivation process is a need which creates a tension in the individuals who move in a certain direction in order to achieve the desired objective which reduces the tension. A satisfied need does not motivate; conversely. Unsatisfied need motivates. (Mitchell, 2010).
The process starts with a perceived need, then a tension is created which starts the motivating behaviour; then is a move towards the realization of the need, a good oriented behaviour. As soon as the need is satisfied, the tension relaxes. To motivate an employee, management must create real or imagined needs for the employee to aspire to. A real need could be a desire to achieve through promotion, increase in wages or enjoyment of increased organizational favour, such as company cars with a chauffeur. Imagined needs of a staff could be an aspiration to have coffee at 10.am. Which is the entitlement of successful executives, to have a secretary, have someone carry his brief case up-stairs, have some run into the office at the sound of the bell or visitors fill papers before they enter into his office. for the purpose of this discussion term such as need, desire, aspiration and drive are used interchangeably. Since every employee has needs, he is capable of being motivated. The task of management is to determine what are the valued needs that will make him react according to organizational desires increased productivity.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
One of the major problem confronting management is that of motivating workers to perform assigned tasks to meet or surpass predetermined standards. It is not easy to motivate an individual, because the success of motivational effort depends on the extent to which the motivator meets the needs of the individual employees for whom it is intended.
This study therefore seeks to find out the determinants of work motivation as the reasons why these determinates should be used by organization like local government councils in Nigeria. The following research questions will this study:
- What is the extent to which motivation practices have enhanced the performance of junior staff in Etinan Local government area Council?
- What are the determinants of work motivation amongst junior employee of Etinan Local government council?
- What are the views of junior employees of Etinan local government council on work motivation?
- What motivation strategies should be adopted to enhance the performance of junior staff in Etinan local government council?
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objectives of the study sought to:
- Examine the extent to which motivation practices have enhanced the performance of junior staff in Etinan local government
- Identify and discuss the determinants of work motivation amongst junior employees of Etinan local government council.
- Find out views of junior employees of Etinan local government council on work motivation.
- Recommend strategies that could beef up motivation in Etinan local government council.
1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
Hi: Motivation practices tends to positively impact on the work performance of junior staff.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of the study rests on the fact that the study might help to provide a practical mechanism for human resources department of local government service commission in motivating junior employees. this is no doubt will serve as a facilitator/motivator, for junior staff to perform their assigned duties in the local government council. also, it will help to stimulate desire and energy in junior employee to be continually interested in and committed to a job, role or subject and to exert persistent effort in attaining a goal. moreso, it will put human resources into action and improves level of efficiency and junior employees. Here, it will make the performance of junior employees which will results into increased productivity and reduced costs of operations.
Also, the study will help the government of being pragmatic in giving incentives to the workers as at when due. it will also serve as a cursor for further research to students of public administration and to the practical knowledge of human resources management.
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study focuses on the factor that motivate junior workers in Etinan local government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The researcher was constrained by several factors. These were lack of funds to more around for information secondly, the researcher was constrained also by time factor.
