Surveying is the art and science of making measurement of relative position of natural and artificial features on the earth surface and plotting of the measurement to a suitable scale for the production of plan/map and section. (Dan Sandi son 2001)

Before carrying out surveying in a particular area the following has to be considered:

  1. The purpose of the survey
  2. The mode of execution
  3. The equipment employed
  4. The area of accuracy
  5. Accuracy required.

However, survey is also classified into the following areas:

  1. Cadastral survey
  2. Topographic survey
  3. Engineering survey
  4. Geodetic survey
  5. Air/Aerial (Photogrammetry) survey
