DETAIL SURVEY OF PART OF ST MARY’S HOSPITAL, URUA AKPAN, ESSIEN UDIM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, AKWA IBOM STATE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background of the Study

Detail survey is used to determine and locate the features and improvements on a parcel of land.

The word “feature means natural and man- made structures on a piece of land; Examples: vegetable, types of soil, building, land utilities, fences and boundaries, road and landmarks. This kind of survey is usually confined to the boundaries of the parent of land. It will often include data such as the elevation of the land, which is: how high the land is above an arbitrary level. Mean sea level (MSL) is a commonly used arbitrary level which is taken as zero meters high. The Easting and Northern coordinates of the land may have to be taken too.

This type of survey is needed when one wants to present information about his/her land for purposes of land valuation, also when one needs to locate and record all land features and structures and when one is planning to construct or extend a building on his/her land.

This survey (Detail) is generally carried out using Survey equipments such as total stations and theodolites. The data is then carried to the office for analysis and preparation of “detail maps” known as DIGITAL TERRAIN MODELS, which provide the detail that have been collected in the form of a map.

These maps are useful for engineers and architects who use them in their designs and plans. This survey should be carried out by a quantified land surveyor who may and assisted by a chain man.
