Chapter One
1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of study
The world is fast becoming a global village due to the increasing daily requirement of energy by all population across the world. Power supply has been erratic for so long in Nigeria. The need for energy and its related services to satisfy human social and economic development, welfare and health, is increasing. All societies call for the services of energy to meet basic human needs such as: health, lighting, cooking, space comfort, mobility and communication, which serve as generative processes [1]. Securing energy supply and curbing energy contribution to climate change are the two-over-riding challenges of energy sector on the road to a sustainable future [2]. It is overwhelming to know in today’s world that 1.4 billion people lack access to electricity, while 85% of them live in rural areas. As a result of this, the number of rural communities relying on the traditional use of biomass is projected to rise from 2.7 billion today to 2.8 billion in 2030 [3].

1.2 Statement of the problem
The failure of the Nigerian power sector to provide adequate electricity supply to domestic households and industrial producers. This Project is design

i. To solve problem of power supply difficulties that cripple the agricultural, industrial, and educational sectors.
ii. To provide a (1.5kW) power supply to the school medical center.
iii. To model a pollution free power supply system.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the study

Aim
The aim of this research project is to design and implement a 1.5kW Renewable Energy System.

  Objectives

To design a 1.5kW Renewable Energy System.
To integrate Renewable energy sources in the design of electrical power system.
To generate electrical energy system that is independent of the grid.

1.4 Scope and Limitations of the study
Scope
This research work is design to cover the application of Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) in design and implementation of a Renewable Energy System.

Limitations
i. The design is limited in construction to the use of least available materials within the reach of students.
ii. It is also limited in it’s application to domestic usage.

1.5 Significance of the study
i. This project can be used to power both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) load.

ii. It is to be installed within the University premises, targeting Electricity demand of the school medical center.

1.6 Expected benefit/importance of the project

i. To reduced the effect of atmospheric and thermal pollution which is causing a serious detrimental effect on our environment.

ii. To serve as power supply to remote area where transmission line can not reach.
iii. To increased energy efficiency with no reliance on the grid and optimal total cost of ownership.
iv. To generate efficient power that can be produced where and when it is needed without transmission lines and transformer losses.
v. To serve as a research prototype for future advancement in green energy development
