CONSTRUCTION OF A TRANSISTORIZED POWER REGULATOR (240 V)

ABSTRACT

A step-by-step approach to the construction of a type of transistionized power regulator of known output voltage. A power regulator is described in the course of this project. The zener diode reverse voltage breakdown is used to the advantage to produce a power regulator diode. That is to say, it is possible to use a zener diode to produce a relative constant voltage from a supply voltage, which can itself fluctuate considerably. This kind of diode belongs to a class of material called “semi-conductor” device, which have intermediate values of resistivities between conductors and insulator. These devices have an important property of conducting current in two independent way i.e. by negative charged (free electrons) and positive charge (holes) and that effectively controlled. In a power regulator circuit, zener diode functions as a voltage-regulating device, when connected across a voltage supply source to a load. It maintains constant potential difference across the load despite the fluctuation in the value of the load resistance or of the voltage from the supply source.

                                                INTRODUCTION

1.1     TRANSISTORIZED POWER REGULATOR

According to Vinycomb (1957), a power regulator is an electronic instrument, which is specially designed to give a specific output voltage. In this project, the supply unit involved in this construction is meant to deliver an output voltage of 240 volts and a current of 0.2 amperes, it is designed to give a stable voltage and current which will help in carrying out the process in which the regulator is designed for. Some equipment are delicate air can be damaged by fluctuation of the power being supplied; this gives the knowledge of constructing a power regulator using a transistor and other electrical components.

Hence, the transistorized power regulator will stabilize the output of (AC) irrespective of the load output supply. Series of devices are connected in the output supply, to deep the voltage constant regardless of variation in the load current.

The basic action of a power regulator is its ability to automatically resist the change in current, in order to maintain a constant voltage.
