COMPUTER-BASED STUDENT EXAMINATION SYSTEM
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 Introduction
This chapter discusses the overview of this research ranging from the introduction to the background of the study, the statement of the problem, aim/objectives of the study where the project’s goal is determined and the significance of the study are also enumerated. This chapter goes further to highlight the scope of the study and lastly the organization of study which briefly describes the structure of this research project.
A computer based examination system is an effective solution for mass educational evaluation. Computer based examination system is designed for universities, schools, colleges and even banking institutions and government for aptitude test and recruitment purposes. Today many organizations are conducting computer based examinations worldwide successfully and produce the results in online. An exam is meant to test a child’s knowledge or willingness to give time to analyze that subject.
1.1 Background of the Study
A formal examination simply refers to an assessment that is taken by an individual to show his/her knowledge or ability in a particular subject, or to obtain a qualification. An example of a formal examination would be a final examination administered by a teacher in a classroom or an examination administered by a psychologist in a clinic. Formal examination often results in a grade or an examination score. An examination score may be interpreted with regards to a norm or criterion, or occasionally both. The norm may be established independently, or by statistical analysis of a large number of participants.
The existing system in the case study shows that there is a peculiar system to examination administration in which after the administered exam, scripts are taken for marking and this usually take considerable number of days before the publication of the student’s results. In some cases, during this process, some student’s names are usually omitted in error and there is always that tendencies of scripts misplacement. To this end, its drawbacks includes: result isn’t released immediately after the exam, wastage of exam materials, collecting answer sheet, and possible evaluations errors. In the current system, there is a peculiar system to examination administration in which after the administered exam, scripts are taken for marking and this usually take considerable number of days before the publication of the student’s results. In some cases, during this process, some student’s names are usually omitted in error and there is always that tendencies of scripts misplacement. As the growth of technology, the paper base examination is replaced with computer based examination system and also web-based examination system. In recent years, a variety of computer based systems are developed for the institutions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In the existing system, examinations have been conducted for so long before now. This procedure from investigation has many problems due to the number of students who seats for the examination every term as well as some number of invigilators. These problems include:
- Haphazard arrangement of students in an exam room, at times four (4) students per a bench which promotes exams malpractice.
- Delay in the release of student’s result.
- Cost implication of printing examination materials.
- Tiredness and lack of concentration on the side of supervisors and invigilators.
- Supervisors and invigilators subjected to high gratification in examination hall leading to students generally relenting in reading.
1.3 Aim/Objective of the Study
This research project is aimed at developing computer based student examination system.
The objectives of this research projects to realize the aims are as follows:
- To create a system that will output reports on all inputted information
- To create a system capable of storing all registered students information
- To create a system that will automatically update students information
- To create a system that will keep track of all registered students
- To create a system which produce fast release of result
1.4 Significance of the Study
The significance of this study is:
- to reduce to the barest minimum problem and stress associated with the use of manual system to conduct examinations in the Apostolic Faith Secondary School, Ikot Ekpene.
- to facilitate timely and accurate administration of student examination.
- to give an immediate first-hand information on the statistics of students writing a given examination.
- to serve as a resource material for subsequent researchers in this area or related field and encourage more research on the subject.
