CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

The need to control fertility has been identified even during the early times and the idea of controlling the family is as old as man.
Hence, family planning refers generally to the process adopted by couples or individuals to choose when to have a child and how many.
According to Clifford (1991) definition of family planning as was adopted by WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION (WHO), states that “it is a way of thinking and living that is adopted voluntarily on the basis of knowledge, attitude and responsible decision, by individuals and couples, in order to promote the health and welfare of the family group, and this contribute effectively to the social development of a country.
Tremendous advancement in medicine, science and technology enables man to control diseases to a certain extent but this does not promote a balance in the birth control rate. The result is on growth explosion on world’s population, which is turning out to be the greatest single problem of the twentieth century. To contend these problems of the population growth family planning must be introduced to reduce the growing population. Foege (1983) states that decreased food availability, poor health facilities and equipment, large population result coupled with poor economy has resulted in gross inadequate health care system, decreased educational facilities and high rate of unemployment, poor shelter, inadequate clothing, under nutrition and malnutrition have been presentry serious problem. To reduce hardships family planning appears to the solution.
In the face of food shortage, over crowding, diseases and the growing, desire for modern case, no realm of research is more important than the development for safe and effective method of family planning. Education is critical for reducing unwanted pregnancy. Health education messages should be based on the incidence and impact of family planning within community and the sensitivity to people’s existing beliefs attitudes and practices information should be offered on the legal status of family planning as a means of preventing unwanted pregnancy.
