INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The idea of establishing radio as any other mass medium is to educate, entertain, inform and socialize the people. The emphasis largely has to do with creating awareness, surveillance of environment and correlation of the parts of the society in responding to its environment and the transmission of cultural heritage.
(Mcquil, 1998), it helps in providing individual reward, relaxation of tension which makes it avoid breakdown. Radio has a tremendous social impact, affecting attitude and behaviour is undeniable.
In recognition of unique nature of radio in terms simplicity, wider coverage brings the world to those who cannot read its immediacy Radio has that personal touch that leads urgency to change.
Basically, communication is the process through which one person elicits responses or give response from another person by the use of symbols. In Radio programme the communication is for more apt to be a group than individuals. The audiences are made up of people of different from each other in a great many respect. These differences physiological, cultural, ethical, religious, political, physical or intellectual. This wide diversity of backgrounds, skill attitude produce problems for radio programme.
Hence, the subject matter of this work Audience Assessment of AKBC Radio programme “talk back “ (survey of listeners in Ikono Local Governemnt) out audience package different programme such as SIBABA SIBABA.
LAUGH IT OUT. These entire programmes are aimed at satisfying their different audience.
It is noteworthy that great numbers of audience listeners to AKBC Radio. One of the ways comment could reach out to the station is through feedback. This allow individual to give an opinion, contribution or suggestion on issue on a matter.
James Payne cited that feedback is the response the sender gets from the receiver. And every comment needs a feedback. Feedback ensures that there is no interference in communication or breakdown in a communication if a person who gives a comment receives a feedback; it’s certain that communication has taken place between the senders to the receiver and makes the receiver to become the sender. However, before there is feedback, there must be a mechanism. The mechanism for feedback includes phones calls. Write-up. Another mechanism for feedback is by writing comment or opinion on a topical issues to their presenter.
AKBC Radio with the acronym “Akwa Ibom State Broadcasting corporation” serves as a means of reaching audience by informing and educating people held a programme known as talk back apart from SIBABA SIBABA laugh it out.
The programme seeks to say what people say about the station and the activities. This programme is not limited to one participation programme but all programmes, it does not have selected audience, is forever AKBC Radio Station listeners.
1.2 Statement of Problem
In Akwa Ibom State there are many Radio programme has related by a AKBC radio service, “Talk Back” is one of such programme, the programme “talk back” is an educative in scope in that it teaches the audience about what is going on in the society. It also enlightens the society.
The programme is basically geared toward audience participation in a local area, and it is often aired by 7:00pm on Thursday’s when it is expected by all members with target audience will benefit from it.
But it is not clear whether the Ikono populations has enjoyed the impact of the programme talk back or whether the apparent in enlightenment of Ikono people is as a result of listening to the programme.
Based on the above scenario it can be asked what is the audience assessment of the AKBC Radio Programme? This is what this research is main to farret.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
- To find out if Ikono listeners are exposed to AKBC Radio feedback programmes
- To ascertain how often the listeners listen to AKBC Feedback programmes
- To assess the influence of AKBC feedback programme on listeners of Ikono
- To profer solutions on the contributions of the programmes on programming.
1.4 Research Questions
- Do Ikono listeners listen to AKBC Radio feedback programmes?
- How often do listeners in Ikono listen to AKBC – radio feedback programmes?
- What are the influence of AKBC- radio feedback programme on listeners in Ikono?
- How can the AKBC feedback programmes be effective for the interest of effective programming?
1.5 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the assessment of Ikono audience on talk back programme in AKBC Radio
Therefore, the investigation restricted to Ikono Local Government.
1.6 Significant of the Study
Like every research work, this study sought to add to the existing knowledge. The research also intends to fill vacuum created by previous works on the issues of radio programmes perception and attitude change and its consequences for programmer and producer.
It also intends to break new grounds by coming out with a very comprehensive, critical and unique work by seeking to know variables relating to intervention in the audience assessment of media contents.
It is therefore, hopes that this study would be of benefit to students of mass communication, AKBC Radio, Ikono Local Government listeners on hand and programme produced and on other.
1.7 Limitations of the Study
