AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM TOWARDS ORGANIZATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Since the inceptions of management as a distinct course, many decades ago, managers and organization are quite aware of the fact that, they cannot exist without a good inflow and out flow of a better information system.
In a modern society, both individuals and organization make decisions from time to time using information as a means of deliberating on issues. The importance of management information system cannot be over emphasized since management information is a recent development.
For any organization to function effectively and efficiently, information dispensation is an indispensable factor. Management information determined to a very large extent the success or failure of such an organization. A good information system is important for the purposes of keeping all lines and levels of the organization and a better management control depends entirely on the availability of information about the company’s activity such as production, sales and other services of the company.
An organization is a social system deliberately established to carryout some definite purpose it consists of people in patterned relationship. That is to say, every organization has a collective identity, such as time schedules a programme of activities, procedures for adding and removing members, all these are made possible through the use of sound management information. Every organization has a division of labour that allocated specialized task to its members and has status order that awards their unequal shares of authority and influence.
Information system helps the business executives to exercise judgment in forming business decision and of course, the scope and extent of such decision is determined by the responsibility delegated to him or her by the organization. Management information is an essential tools of the management process which is concerned with planning, organizing, classification, distributing and summarizing the data collected.
Due to the importance of organizational set up, this research was out to find out the analysis of management information system towards organizational productivity and to see to what extent it has contributed to the success or the failure of the organizational productivity with special reference to Apex Printing work Nigeria Limited, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
- STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
- To investigate the various empirical analysis of management information system with the view of ascertaining its impact and relationship towards organizational productivity.
- Most organization do not believe or make use of processed information and data in arriving at their business decision. This situation has given rise to the premature death of companies
- The essence of this research therefore is to correct this problem by way of using the positive empirical analysis of management information system toward organizational productivity.
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The result of the study will relate the link between an information systems with organizational productivity. As a result, it help organizations such as schools, ministries, government parastatals in their respective peculiar management policies. Secondly, this research will also help the students of polytechnic, Ikot Osurua in their study, in the sense that it would serve as a resources of information to them in their future research topic.
Finally, this research will help the management of Apex printing Work (Nigeria) Limited to improve upon the system of management information in their organization.
1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study focuses attention on Apex Printing Work (Nig) Limited, Ikot Ekpene Akwa Ibom State.
1.5 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
In this study, the following limitations was observed:
- It is worth noting that this study is hindered in the areas of securing relevant and ready materials from the company visited.
- Lack of necessary funds needed hampered a more thorough work and much methodological investigating during the research process.
- Also, time allocated for the research and completion of the project was very short as other academic demands needed time well as well.
Therefore, there is every possibility that another researcher working on the same or similar subject will come up with different finding and conclusion, if the problems enumerated above are taken care of.
HO: There is no significant relationship between management information system and organizational productivity.
HI: There is a significant relationship between management information system and organizational productivity.
HO: There is no significant relationship between the application of management information system and the mortality rate of organizations.

1.7 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following research question were developed.
- Will the management of Apex Printing works be able to tell us, when they brought into existence the use of management information system?
- Will the management of Apex Printing works be able to identify the basic components of the various flow of information in the organization?
- Will the management of Apex Printing works be able to determine the contribution of management information system towards organizational productivity?
- Will they be able to tell us if there is any relationship between management, information system and organizational productivity?
- Will the management of Apex Printing Work be able to tell us how helpful is management information system in the production department.
Historical background of Apex Printing Work Ltd. This project research deal with the empirical analysis of management information system towards organizational productivity with special reference to Apex Printing Works (Nig) Limited, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
The establishment of this company was made possible through the single effort of the owner of the company. According to Apex handbook published in 1975 the Company started its full printing work with an authorized capital of N5 million. According to the managing Director of the company, the authorized capital of N5 Million has been increased to N12 million and later to N28 million to widen the equity shares of the Company. The company is located at No.4 Essien Road in Ikot Ekpene in AKwa Ibom State which is also its registered office.
The main objective of the company is to meet the growing need of the people within the area of operation. This company undertake all kind of printing work such as printing of calendars, almanacs, programmes of activities, greeting cards, binding of books, text books, novels, complementary cards etc. Ever since the establishment of the company, the company has been served as a development agent in the local areas of the state and also provide employment opportunity for the indigenes within the environment of operations.
To avoid unclear meaning which may arise as a result of a particular word having more than one meaning, terms applied in this study are defined below:
Information
Is data presented in a way or form that has meaning. Thus summarizing the four pieces of data just given period information. The plants has excess capacity and is therefore incurring unnecessary cost. Information has meaning to a manager and provides a basis for action. Ricky W. Griffin (1999:102).
System
A system is an interrelationship which exist between different components designed to achieve a specific objective Regon A (1989:65).
Productivity:
In a general sense, productivity is an economic measure of efficiency that summarizes the value of outputs relative to the value of the inputs used to create them . Arthy J. (1972:72).
Management Information System
Therefore a broad term used to define all system designed to support the management and control of the organization at all level is management information system Ackoff, R. L. (1967:110).
1.9 ORGANISATION OF STUDY
For the purpose of easy understanding of this research, the chapters are divided into five and are in this sequence. Chapter one contains the introduction, statement of the problems, scope of the study, the significance of the study, limitation of the study, research hypothesis, research question, definition of the terms, used in the study, organization of the study in included in this chapter.
Chapter two is concerned with the review of related literature chapter three presents research methodology. Chapter four the data collected are presented, analysed and interpreted through the use of percentage and tables to fully explain the findings.
Finally chapter five, which is the last chapter, contain the summary, recommendation, conclusion.
